Why do bad things happen to good people? INTRODUCTION

The age-old question has been on my mind more these days– “why do bad things happen to good people.” In an ocean of suffering the question seems to stand immovable like the Rock of Gibraltar on the horizon line. You can’t sail through life without coming to this question. It looms massive, crushing wayward ships against its unforgiving stone. It has humbled kings and galley slaves alike– it is no respecter of persons. Suffering comes to us all.

That was theory a few weeks ago. Not anymore.

Today I am starting a series that is my best effort to explain why a good God allows such terrible suffering. The series will consist of four posts each with one key point that will hopefully set the foundation for the next post. I don’t approach this subject glibly—it’s a serious issue that needs neurosurgeon-like precision to undertake. I set forth with prayerful caution and humility.

It is easy to philosophize, but I would rather see what God’s Word has to say on the subject. My brain is too small and weak and biased to undertake such a question. I need God’s perspective.

Here how this week’s series will look:

Point One: There’s no such thing as a “good” person. All we enjoy is pure, unmerited grace.

Point Two: The highest good in the universe is God’s exaltation, and therefore everything God does is toward that end.

Point Three: The highest good (God’s exaltation) is also God’s greatest act of love.

Point Four: The highest good (God’s exaltation) and our highest joy (worship) could not be accomplished if evil had not entered the world.

I hope to make each post as short as possible while still getting the point across to increase its readability. Hopefully discussing these huge points will help us come to grips with the sovereignty of God in suffering. Feel free to ask questions, leave comments, or make suggestions. Please correct me if I’m off.
